In Western India, the place to start any tour is the city famously renowned as Bollywood because of its prolific film industry and formerly known as Bombay. Now called Mumbai, it is a major metropolis and the financial capital of India.
The dynamism of Mumbai is extraordinary. It has marvelous shopping arcades, fine restaurants and art galleries and one of the most famous hotels in the world the Taj Mahal. Nearby is the Gateway of India, built in 1911 to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to the Delhi Durbar. The Prince of Wales Museum, the Jehangir Art Gallery and the city’s various churches, temples and shrines – including the one of Haji Ali out on an island linked by a causeway – are all worth seeing.
An absolute must is a boat ride out to Elephanta Island to see the marvelous rock cut caves noted for their huge sculpted panels. Other interesting destinations within an easy reach include the Kanheri Caves, the beach resorts at Madh Island and Manori and the charming little hill station of Matheran.
